Metaphors

Metaphors No 2
WALT: recongise and use metophors correctly.
A metaphor is a word that says one thing is another.  It is used to help a reader visualise an object or a person., but is more direct that the simile and does not include the words ‘like’ or ‘as.’
An example:  You are a donkey.    which means that the person is behaving similar to a donkey so they are being very stubborn.
The trees marched along the hillside.   This means the pattern that the trees create across the hillside which looks similar to soldiers marching in formation.

A  Make a Metaphor
  1. Complete the metaphor by joining the two halves together.
The road is  a ribbon.
She is a busy bee.
Glow-worms are sequins.
Our coach is a dragon.
He was an angry wasp.

2.   Imaginative Metaphors
Complete each sentence in an imaginative way by using a metaphor.  One is done for you.
  1. The pool is a  mirror reflecting the forest.
  2. The clouds are a barrier between us and space
  3. A tuatara is a modern dinosaur
  4. An old face tells a story without saying a word.

C.  ‘Metaphor Poem
Poems use metaphors s well as similes.  Highlight the metaphors in this verse from the poem by Gwenda McKay.
When I walk outside I play a game.
Of matching things-not-quite-the-same.

A tree is a green umbrella.
It shelters me from rain.
Rain puddles are my mirrors.
I see myself again.
Worms are living rubber bands.
The wriggle pinkly on my hands.
The moon’s a golden ball hanging high.
In the darkness in the sky.

It teases me to make a link…
I sometimes have to think and think.
